As a newly confirmed Catholic since 2018, an easy way for me to learn about the saints is by creating emblem style illustrations of each saint, trying to relate the surrounding designs to their story.
They are made from Adobe Illustrator, often drawing on ideas coming from sketches particularly of facial features, iconography and imagery relating to the particular saint. Cool idea for some stickers right?
Thanks to a connection and friend at St Luke University Parish, I was lucky enough to redesign their website using WordPress and helped with troubleshooting for the parish staff after completion. I presented the concept of the redesign through idea boards via Pinterest, wire framing and sketches to create ideas and walk staff through my design process. Clarity of navigation and how it would read for the viewer was a big part of the project.
Laker Catholic, based at Grand Valley State University in Allendale Michigan, believes that meeting the spiritual needs of college students at this crucial point in their life is of upmost importance. They played a vital role in my spiritual reversion back in 2018. It was truly a life changing experience for my relationships, the meaning of community, and living the Catholic faith out as a young adult. I was so excited to be able to rebrand this college ministry, previously called Catholic Student Ministries.
Laker Catholic is a vibrant community of students “anchored” in the Catholic faith. This community gives students the opportunity to get involved in weekly educational events, group Bible studies, praise and worship adoration, IM sports, retreats, and service projects.
The Messenger is a great way for family and loved ones to keep up with the ongoings of the students involved with Catholic ministries at Grand Valley. This newsletter is something new to the parish and has been a great project for practicing branding, typography, and layout. The Messenger is posted twice a year and contains articles from Fr. Bill, the students, and different events that have taken place through out the year.
Great Commission is an apparel line targeted towards Christians as a means of evangelization. The name “Great Commission” comes from the last recorded personal instruction given by Jesus to his disciples, to evangelize and “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This command is one that applies not only to his disciples, but to all Christians, which is why I decided to make an apparel line based on that scripture.
The company itself sells a wide variety of shirts, hoodies, hats and even stickers! Since the idea of the brand is to evangelize, each order of a designed apparel item comes with a picture card with a description on the back, explaining the design and what it means in the Christian faith. This is so that if a stranger where to ask what the design was about or what it was from, you would be able to explain it’s meaning based on what you learned from the card. The designs are made to target younger Christian audiences, from teenagers to young adults (30’s). The website and Instagram page are both ways of marketing the company, but also through trade shows and church events or gatherings are ways of getting the word out. This is shown through the trade show style installation.
Being a Christian myself, I was inspired to do this project through my beliefs but also through getting the idea about an apparel line through my uncle, who has been more than willing to through a lot of ideas my way over the past couple years! Through his passion and motivation to do something with this idea, I decided that the best way to help him with the design aspect was to start the branding and creation of the products and signage through my senior project, and I believe that I have been very successful in doing so!
The Annual Catholic Services Appeal, or CSA, raises funds for the various ministries and efforts of Evangelization within the Diocese of Reno, Nevada. Parishes are given a goal, and any amount donated over that goal is returned to the parish as a rebate. Parishes use the rebate to conduct repairs, pay down debt, or for help charitable works.
This design for a poster and brochure is meant to explain the mission and to create appeal to contribute. This was a fun project for typography, organization, and composition.
